Time and time again I find my self searching for the opening times of my local beautician or contact number for a recommended plumber, however it is still apparent that small businesses are still not investing in a website. Although some may argue that if your busy, why do we need to attract new clients? Well….I’m sure everyone is aware that in this economic climate we can never predict how long we will be busy for. No matter how many recommendations and referalls from Yell you may receive, a website is a way of finalising contributing to the buying process.

No matter what industry and no matter how big or small you may be, a website is the first thing people will come in contact with. If there is not one present that potential may move on to the next recommendation. Most small businesses require a static brochure website to merely inform customers of your contact details, services and prices. A standard 4 page website is sufficient for something like this and can lead onto a number of enquiries.

In my experience the main barrier to setting up a website is the time and cost so get in touch with Pink Koala and we can discuss some affordable packages for you!

The Design Suite are based in York and provide the city with some fantastic open studios and art and craft courses. This was a great project to be involved within with some new challenges such as course booking and e-commerce section. Working with a creative brand made this project fun and open to numerous ideas. Check out the project here.

Content is one of the most important factors when it comes to SEO. Although most web designers don’t design with SEO in mind it really is something worth considering as the benefits are huge. Including relevant content is key to informing search engines of your sites offerings, therefore ensuring you have at least 1-2 paragraphs of textual content on each page is very important.

Back in the day, this was a keyword stuffing scenario, however search engines became aware and now quality content is key. Make sure when your web developer designs your website, ask for content where possible. The best way to implement this is to include 1-3 paragraphs on the homepage and 1-2 paragraphs across each category/service page which introduces the page and its main contents.

A good example of good homepage content is First Choice; They have relevant and helpful information with textually also explains to search engines what the site is about.

A good example of category/service content is ASOS; they have great instructions to each shopping category, which is perfect as they aim to land users on specific product pages if such queries are typed in.

Although the examples above relate to large e-commerce brands the same rule applies for all industries, in fact content is even more important to distinguish yourself from your competitors. If you are for example a company offering a service similar to Pink Koala then home page content is the best place to start. Once this is in place restructure your pages and make sure there is a page for every service you offer. This will then ensure that you have sufficient content across they key sectors in your industry, all with a dedicated page of information. This is much more beneficial than just one page with all services listed.

Any Questions? @PinkKoalaWD

Social media, especially Facebook is something many businesses are not quite getting right. Most people have jumped on the bandwagon with the idea of a ‘free’ marketing tool but are you using it your best advantage?

My work often involves working with small businesses, many of which have no social media campaign in place. I think it is extremely important for small brands such as the local beauty salon to the football club to have interaction with the community where possible. I have therefore outlined some simple Facebook guidelines which every business should follow.

1. Create your fan page

Set up your fan page using the name of your brand. Alternatively if your name has been taken use something as close as possible.

2. Profile Picture

Your profile picture is one of the most important parts of your fan page. This image attracts the eye, informs the visitor and immediately embeds recognition of your brand. To everyone’s surprise the profile picture area is extremely large. It can actually host an image as large as 180x540px. Use this space to the max and include your logo, an image, your products and more importantly a call to action. You have one chance to promote your website, your latest promotions and your phone number so use it wisely. Some fantastic examples are O2, Walkers and Ferrari.

3. Communicate

What do I write I hear you all say? Facebook revolves around communication and interaction. Speak in first person and make your brand sound as though it has a voice. Bring your personality to the forefront. Simple updates such as company news and up and coming events is a great start, but mix with questions and humour. It is important not to just ‘talk at’ your fans. They need to feel involved with your brand, so create a dialogue by asking questions, and ask for opinions and ideas. Respond to question and comments and ensure that you ‘like’ your fans content.

4. Add value

Most people become a fan because they feel that they will receive some value from your brand. This often means a discount, or a sale preview or even just a promotion. Use Facebook to attract people to your brand. Offer discounts to the first 100 fans or offer 10% off their next order. It is key to offer something back to your fans and give them a reason to be your fan.

5. Post regular updates

Keep fans interested and keep your brand in their news feed. Don’t overdo it but 1-2 status updates a day is sufficient.

6. Post pictures of your latest products or projects

Keep fans interested by posting photos of you latest products/projects. In sale period offer a preview of your sale collection and give something to your fans which can only be seen via Facebook.

7. Be in the know

Always be on the ball, see what your competitors are doing on Facebook and improve it. Keep up to date with other brands and their offerings and link to their pages when possible.

8. Promote

Just because you have a fan page it does not mean that your social media strategy is complete! You need to promote it, attract new fans and tell the world. It is very important to interact with fans talking about your brand so go in search of brand mentions. Ensure that Facebook it fully promoted on your website, your business cards and your email signatures.

Facebook is a vital part of any brands marketing campaign no matter how big or small the business. Ensure that you are not missing out and start socialising now.
